Why Am I A Photographer? | Georgia Family Lifestyle Photographer

Today I want to talk about how my photography business began, and why I even started it in the first place. I have always been a creator at heart. Whenever asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, I always said “a teacher and an artist.” And honestly, that’s just what I’ve done.

Towards the end of my senior year of high school I was stumped as to what I wanted to study in college. I thought of everything from neuroscience, psychology, counselling, teaching, architecture, Spanish, photography, public relations, etc.

My original declared major was Communications but after a lot of thought, prayer, and research, I finally decided to change my major to Elementary Education. Teaching is a strong passion of mine; I love working with people and watching them grow, and learn, and become a better version of themselves.

I also always enjoyed taking pictures of people I love (I even have some hilarious 2008 flip phone photos that I thought were awesome photos at the time…) but it wasn’t until I became the yearbook editor my senior year of high school that I seriously considered photography as a means to create. After inheriting an old, broken Canon rebel when I graduated, I kept it with me in a box for years just waiting for the time I’d have enough money to get it fixed and use it.

Well a few years later, my sweet husband secretly got that old, broken Canon rebel repaired for me, and my photography business began. After graduating college we moved to Georgia and I put my camera away again to began my first teaching job. Shortly after, we moved to New York, and then very shortly after that our daughter was born!

Those first two years after graduating college was an important growing season for me and my family and after a few years pausing my photography business, I finally decided enough was enough and I jumped back into creating. To be honest, my husband and my daughter were really the spark that reignited my creativity and momentum to take the leap and begin my business again.

The best part about photography is that it’s the perfect medium for me to promote and celebrate all the things I cherish and value in life: family, love, parenthood, children, beauty, creating, remembering, and the list goes on…
